Sorry, but you’re unlikely to find ‘coral’ reefs at diveable depths off Galway–most corals are tropical animals. True, there are coldwater corals in the North Atlantic, but they grow at depths (250+ m) well beyond the range of even the most experienced recreational divers, never mind newbies.

But don’t let that put you off–I’ve heard from friends (also instructors) that the diving off Galway is very nice. The reefs that you can visit will be covered by sponges, anemones and/or kelp rather than corals, but still with lots of life and colour. You’ll have to wear a thick (5-7 mm) 2-piece wetsuit or a drysuit, though–even in late summer, water temps. won’t go much higher than 18-20°C.

You should be able to locate dive shops in the area through Google, Yellow Pages, or the classified-ad pages of dive magazines (my favorite UK mag is ‘DIVER’–dunno if you can buy it over the newsagent counter in Eire, although I don’t see why not). If there are several ‘possibles’, visit them all to have a chat to the people who might be teaching your course. Sign up with the one who gives you the best vibe.

You won’t regret it, I promise. All the best.
