You can….but for a little more, you can learn to dive and have a tropical vacation at the same time…

We operate a dive resort in the Philippines. Dive Apo Islandm, the Disneyland of diving and pay the same.

To answer your last question first – no, scuba training is not optional. Scuba diving involves using unfamiliar life support equipment in order to survive in an environment that human beings are not well adapted to. It is not at all difficult to make a decision that results in injury or possibly even death if scuba diving without proper training, because even the air that you are breathing can be dangerous underwater. Attacks by aquatic animals are the least of your worries, there are much more subtle risks that can result in permanent disability or loss of life if scuba diving is done improperly.

An entry level certification course typically involves a minimum of 4 days of training activities that involves classroom/academic study, acquisition of basic scuba skills in confined water (e.g. pool), and demonstration of basic scuba skills in 4 or more dives in the open water (e.g. lake or ocean). The details involved with training may vary slightly depending upon which scuba training organization standards are being used.

To locate a dive center near you that offers scuba training you can use the dive center locator application at Dive Training magazine – http://www.dtmag.com/dcsearch.html . You type in your zip code and the application shows the names and contact info of the 7 dive centers nearest that location. Additional information about learning how to scuba dive can be found at http://www.dtmag.com/learntodive.html

Dive Training magazine also maintains a list of some of the better known dive sites across the United States. Virginia is included in the Mid-Atlantic states area which can be found at http://www.dtmag.com/dive-usa/ma.html . Click on a dive flag to learn more about a specific dive site (if there is more information available).
