You already got some good answers. The guys are right about thickness and flexibility. Another usual difference is that surf suits zip up the back, and don’t have any snaps or fasteners on the front., because you paddle on your belly. Dive suits zip up the front, because you wear your tank and back-pack on your back.
PS: ONLY buy wetsuits in good surf or dive shops. Or, if you are lucky enough, there are a few wetsuit stores out there, like Wetsuit World in NJ. DON’T BUY ON LINE.

Flexibility, to a degree. You sacrifice a bit of this for durability. Scuba gear is very abrasive to wetsuits. But really the main difference is thickness. Even the warmest ocean is cooler than your body’s temperature, and there’s a huge difference between sitting in the water and being submerged in it for an hour. Here in San Diego I wear a 3mm wetsuit to surf most the year, except when the water is warmer. But diving I wear a 7mm wetsuit, because 20 feet down the water gets a lot colder. The real loss of flexibility is due to the much thicker suit, but my 7mm suit today is about as flexible as my 3mm surfing suit was 20 years ago.

Surfboard man is right. Surfing wetsuits usually are more flexible for the physical use that is in surfing. They also sometimes have some padding on the knees and things like that.

Flexibility – Surf wetsuits are meant to be very flexible.

Why are you asking me? I don’t do either one.
