A scuba set is an independent breathing set that provides a scuba diver with the breathing gas necessary to breathe underwater during scuba diving. It is much used for sport diving and some sorts of work diving.

Typically a “scuba set” consists of at least:
1/ Exposure protection. A wetsuit, dry suit or a simple swim suit.
    2/ Swim fins
    3/ A Mask
    4/ A gas cylinder ( air at it’s basic)
5/ A set of regulators. These take the high pressure breathing gas in the cylinder and deliver that gas to the diver in a pressure that the diver can use at the depth he/she is currently at. There are two types of regs. The First Stage reg is attached to the tank valve and takes the gas from the cylinder and knocks it down considerably. 3,000 pounds per square inch ( typical fill for an aluminum 80 cubic foot tank) and then down to about 150 pounds per square inch or less if you’re diving within recreational limits. The Second Stage is a demand regulator. It’s what goes in your mouth. It takes that 150 psi gas (approx) and gives it to you when you need it ( when you inhale).
6/ A Buoyancy Compensator Device ( a BC). Think of this as a life vest that you can inflate or deflate. Deflate…and if you are properly weighted, you will go down. Inflate it and you go up. Usually it’s inflated by a connection to your tank and dumped by a choice of valves on the BC. It also has straps to hold the gas cylinder on your back and a few D rings to clip other things onto it like underwater lights or cameras.
7/ Weight. Either a belt with lead weights on it or sometimes a high end BC will have weight pockets to put lead in. You need weight to get down. The average human needs at least 12 pounds of lead. It can be more depending on the human and other factors like fresh or salt water, gear being carried or worn by the diver and even how calm the diver is
Those are the basics. A “scuba set” can be more complex or even have fewer elements, depending on the type of diving being done.
