What are the requirements for a Scientific Diving (Scuba) Certification?

I am applying for a job and they told me that if I have my scientific diving certification I would get to go on the dives with them when they lay 2 miles of audio line in the Pacific Ocean. BadA$$! I currently have my Open Water Certification and I would love to get my Scientific Diving Certification. What are the requirements? Do you have to have your advanced? Are there a minimum number of hours that have to be logged? Any information would help. Thanks.

I Googled ‘Scientific Diver Certification’ and it appears to be a NOAA-ratified certification for divers involved in scientific/university research projects. Here’s a link (from the University of Florida) that describes the(ir) requirements (your mileage may vary):

    http://www.ehs.ufl.edu/Dive/Certification/Certification.htm

The following NOAA link allows you download the certification forms which (I assume) you need to get signed off in order to be registered as a scientific diver:

    http://www.ndc.noaa.gov/forms_sci.html

This link describes the difference between a ‘scientific’ and a ‘working’ diver, according to NOAA, and tells you what qualifications you need (it took a while to download on my browser, but it arrived in the end):

    http://www.ndc.noaa.gov/pdfs/scientific_vs_working_diver_certification.pdf

Bascially it looks like you’ll need to do a fair bit of training, depending on your current level of experience. Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

    All the best.

The first answer was very good — I would also recommend you contact your local dive shop that offers NAUI or PADI training and ask them. They would know what are your best resources for finding out about certifications and where to get the necessary courses and certs.
