There are great dive sites in all 50 states. Find a local dive shop and see if they have a “Discover Local Diving” or a “Local Orientation Dive” program. Fresh water diving can be just as enjoyable as Salt water. I personaly enjoy the Northwest diving around the Puget Sound. Vis isn’t that good, but when you do see stuff it’s always good.
Everything I read in Sport Diver has me chomping to head down to the Keys.
I’m told Flower Garden Banks off the coast of Texas is beautiful, but it’s a long boat ride.
Also told there’s some good wreck diving in the Great Lakes but it’s cold.
I’m also looking forward to a SC trip to go looking for fossilized shark’s teeth.
