  1. gam says:

when your ears fist start to hurt close your mouth, hold your nose and blow air out your ears. they will probably tell you this pretty soon.

  2. abnxray says:

You must EQUALIZE early and often, before you descend and as you are descending. This should have been taught and shown to you BEFORE and during the class

  3. Tobias says:

Very common if you dive with a cold or slight congestion. Did you equalise on the way down? And did it clear ok? If so then you have a reverse block caused by congestion.

The easiest way to relieve it would be to use a decongestion medication. ‘Actifed’ is usually fast acting. However dont use this as a way to dive when you have a cold, It does wear off. Its also worth getting checked out at the doctors to make sure there is no blockage.

  4. x-ray says:

equalize your ears! that the most important rule of diving next to breathing

  5. Heretic says:

As others have said, you need to equalize early and often.

Here’s a few ways to try:

Pinch you nose, and blow out GENTLY though your nose.

    Yawning

Tilting your head side to side

Jaw “pop” (opening your jaw quickly)

Try any combinationn of the above. What works best for some may not work for you.

I do a combination of popping my jaw and exhaling through my nose without pinching it shut. Works great, for me. Play around on land till you find something that works for you.
