Joel-Peter Witkin – Gods of Earth and Heaven – Is he himself in this photograph?

I’ve yet to see this image in person but for those of you who have (or happen to know a lot about this image or his photography in general), I was wondering about something in this image. At the very bottom there is a man laying down beneath the 4 models in the photo, appearing to be underwater, that I’m pretty sure is Witkin himself. But I’m not positive. Needless to say that whether it is or not makes a huge difference in the viewing of this photograph. Anyone have an idea?

The photo of this title by Witkin that is a parody of Botticelli’s Birth of Venus is likely not a cameo of the artist. In the book of the same title is a portrait of Witkin, and it does not look like him. I met him at a gallery opening a few years ago in Chicago and I cant say that it is him either. I think the person at the bottom of the composition looks rather feminine, Witkin does not. If it is critical you find out absolutely, I suggest you contact one of the galleries he shows at or maybe the International Center for Photography in NYC or the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago.
