Is there good scuba diving near Los Angeles?

We’re considering moving to Los Angeles, CA and we’re both avid scuba divers. Is there good diving within a reasonable distance from LA? Thanks in advance for any information…!

Probably, just don’t go anywhere near sharks.

To go to good diving areas, go to the Dominican Republic. But you knew that.

Great scuba diving! Catalina Island is a favorite place to dive, but also boat diving off the Channel Islands, or beach diving in LA or Orange County. You don’t say where you’re from, but the water is cold here, so you’ll need an appropriate wetsuit.

Of course there Catalina island (with 50ft vis), but if your diving often, the boat ride can get a bit expensive.
If your looking at shore dives, I dive all over in the Laguna beach area, so it’s a bit of a drive, but not too far. I’d say my favorite place in Laguna would be a night dive at Shaw’s cove.

There’s also beaches in Aliso that are amazing. Treasure Island is a really nice spot there (it’s not really an island, but it is a giant stride entry which nice). There’s also Wood’s cove, but conditions have to be really good to get in.

Redondo beach is a very opinionated place. Personally, I only like it at night, because it’s all sand, so in the day there isn’t much, but at night all the octopus, squid, and crabs come out. But if you want a deep dive, deepest I’ve been there is 110, but it goes even further (given you have a big tank).

I have to tell you though, water is usually pretty cold. If you have something less than a 5 mil, you will freeze to death. I have a 7, with a 3mil hooded vest, and still it can get cold.
