  1. Kirby says:

I don’t think it’s a sport because as far as I know you don’t “compete” in SCUBA diving. It’s more of an activity.

  2. scubabob says:

Sure it is. According to Webster’s dictionary, the word sport includes the meaning “physical activity engaged in for pleasure”.

    “Main Entry:
    2sport
    Function:
    noun
    Date:
    15th century

1 a: a source of diversion : recreation b: sexual play c (1): physical activity engaged in for pleasure (2): a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in.”

    That’s directly from Webster’s dictionary.

Hence, it’s a sport. Is it an official one? Yes again, since there are regulating organizations that decide rules that ought to be obeyed while diving and also structure different classes of diver ( an example being Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue diver etc). These organizations also oversee standards for equipment design and use as well.
What is it classed as? A water sport and sometimes as an extreme sport. Personally, I think it’s more a water sport. Extreme is…too extreme. It’s actually quite safe to do if you’re properly trained and have the proper equipment that’s properly maintained.
