  1. Scuba Kip says:

It seems like you are someone that cannot clear your ears. You absolutely must be able to this to able to Scuba Dive. If you cannot clear your ears and equalize, you can have permanent damage in hearing.

Normally when we dive, and have problems with this, we ascend a short distance up and try the technique you use, some times a little bit more force than normal, but have to be careful. As soon as it hurts you have to go towards the surface 3 to 5 ft and try again. As you start your dive, and you start going down try to equalize frequently.

If you have sinus problems, or have a cold, heavy congestion, you may not be able to equalize. If it is none of this you probably have a blocked eustachian tube which goes to the back of your throat from your middle ear. When you have a cold this gets blocked up. Some people have this as a permanent condition. You can get this checked out. I am not sure how well this condition can be corrected by medicine.

You can also try this ear clearing by snorkeling – go under 10 ft or so and se if you can clear your ears. If you have access to deep swimming pool at a school where they practice platform diving (not Scuba), you can try snorkeling and test your situation. Take it easy – and do not hurt your ears.

I relly hope you can get back to Scuba Diving. It is a great sport. Good luck to you.
If it turns out that this is a permanent condition for you – you will not be able to Scuba Dive.
