How Do You Get Scuba Certified And What Do You Have To Do To Maintain That Certification?

I really want to get certified and I’m pretty sure i can take classes at the YMCA but what are the requirements in order to get certified and to maintain that certification (like how many hours you have to scuba a year to not lose certification).

Yes, the Y offers a cert. How? Sign up for their course or one of their competitors like PADI, NAUI, BSAC or SSI , complete their course and you are certified for life. There’s no requirement from any certifying agency regarding the number of hours you need to dive each year. If you feel you’re rusty after not diving for a year or more, most dive shops offering instruction, will also offer a refresher course if you or the shop Instructor deem needed. Usually it’s only a single dive that covers all the basics learned in your Open water course and takes an hour or so. It’s always a good idea if you’ve not dived for awhile but it’s not by any means compulsory. It’s just smart is all and conducted in a safe environment to get you back on your fins if needed.
As for your OW (open water, first level in recreational diving), it normally takes a week to complete. You’ll do night classes regarding theory and procedures as well as at least two pool dives teaching practical as well as some swimming assessment. You will need to tread water 10 minutes unassisted and some swimming using whatever swim stroke or combination you wish. The distance swim is not timed. It may be 200 or 300 M depending of if you use nothing or mask and snorkel. Your choice if you go the PADI route. Once you’ve passed the final exam, you’ll be off to open water to do two dives using the same skills you were taught in the pool. No difference other than location and a little more depth and a little less visibility as a rule but never deeper than 30 ft usually and clear enough that you can see your classmates opposite you easily.
Pass it all..and welcome to diving! Take pictures….leave only bubbles.:)

You already have great answer from Scubabob. There is nothing to maintain your certification. Once you are certified – you are always certified. Now – If have not gone Diving for a long time like 2-3 years – I would suggest for you let the Dive Operator know – they will give you a refresher – and keep an extra watch – as you start diving again.
    Happy Diving.
