Has the accident or fatality rate improved in Scuba diving over the years?

DAN keeps dive statistics but have not, in the past, talked much about the accident or fatality rate in the general diving community. I suspect the population of recreational divers has increased over the years. I’m wondering if the rate of fatalities (like per 100,000 divers) has increased or decreased.

Wrong stat to look at actually. When you have more divers being certified annually, the rate could very well go up simply because of the larger population of divers. A per # of dives stat or bottom hours might be a more reliable way but even that’s still open to what constitutes what sort of dive and even by what sort of certified diver.
I honestly don’t think a fatality rate is something that can accurately be counted.
