Do we need to know how to swim if we want to go scuba diving?

For info, i don’t know how to swim at all. I snorkeled about a hundred times but always with a life jacket on. Or should i take a swimming lesson first?
Add info – i don’t intend to take the license, i only want to do DSD (Discover Scuba Diving)

id advise you learn to swim first.

  2. Uji says:

Yes you do. Once you get to the right depth, you will have to swim around to move and if you do not now how to swim, it is very dangerous to scuba dive. If anything goes wrong and you know how to swim, you can swim up, but on the other hand if you do not, what would you do? Better to be on the safe side.

yes, i would highly suggest it along with getting certified either padi maui or some other organization. know what you are doing first then dive its your life in at stake after all

  4. BW says:

Um yeah. With scube diving you’ll be deep under water, a life jacket won’t help you. you should actually be an experienced swimmer before you go scuba diving. Not just one swimming class

  5. Ambivalence says:

Ideally, you need all the skills to your advantage in the event of a problem – why do you scuba with a knife… To be prepared for an emergency

  6. Bobby says:

If you take a course from PADI or NAUI you have to be able to swim to pass the class. In an emergency if your BC deflated or you lost your fins, you would have to swim or drown.

Yes, you must learn to swim before you get certified to dive.

When I got certified (by PADI) everyone in the class had to demonstrate swimming and treading water ability before you could even begin the class.

This is for your own safety and comfort, diving can be dangerous but being as prepared as possible is the best way to stay safe.

Have fun, diving is absolutely amazing!!

EDIT: Even if you don’t intend to get certified you need to know how to swim, no reputable dive outfitter will let you do a resort course without knowing how to swim, if they do, run the other way, its very unsafe.

Um yeah because you are swimming. Wud do you expect to magically float from place to place. Use some common knowledge for christs sake.

    Hi there,

If you are after a Scuba qualification, the minimum distance you have to be able to swim is 200metres unaided, without swimming fins.

You also need to be able to tread water (or at least stay afloat) without any aids for a time of 10 minutes.

That is the basic requirements for a PADI Open Water qualfication.

Scuba Diving is not a physically tough activity, however, diving involves both surface and underwater swimming and not being able to at least swim 200m unaided, could put either yourself or buddies at risk.

I would strongly recommend being able to swim before diving.

yeah you have to swim 8laps of a pool or close to that
