There is no age limit for knives. Your parents might not approve of you having one though—best to ask them.

*Necessary* is not part of the scuba lexicon for a knife, though *important* in some situations is. The usual phraseology is “a scuba knife is a useful and practical tool for many situations.” Particularly anywhere you might become entangled in mono-filament, lines, wires, etc. Lots of less experienced divers think kelp forests require a knife, but I’ve always found kelp lets go when one stops fighting the kelp.

Some dive operations and dive sites do not permit a knife. I think the marine sanctuary at Key Largo is one.

Different countries have different laws when it comes to selling blades/knives. Some have age restrictions and some don’t. If your country has an age restriction on selling knives and you are under this age restriction and whether a scuba diving knife is classified as a blade/knife under this certain law then you won’t be able to purchase one legally. However this doesn’t stop people from selling or buying knives. These laws are separate to any scuba rules or regulations. I don’t believe there is an age restriction on carrying one while diving but I suppose it depends where.
Whether it is necessary to have a diving knife depends on what type of diving you will be doing. It is considered a useful tool and important in some situations. Never go diving alone.
