Since I have no experience with underwater photography, I can’t really help you, but I also can’t resist telling you that the best type of lens may be a fish-eye. (I break myself up sometimes.)
I would say an ultra-wide angle lens or a fish-eye lens. The lens would probably depend on the underwater housing you have for your camera.
I would prefer a fish-eye or a wide lens so you can get a wide perspective.

I agree that your going to want to go wide angel rather than telephoto. It will also depend on what type of housing you have. There are too many wide angel lenses to suggest without knowing what your housing holds. Also you need a lens with a very wide maximum aperture especially if you plan to go to any depths. Light fall off is extreme. Good luck.
